Rants

I've been eating right and working out for over 20 years now and I've heard it all... Every kind of crazy comment and
lack of understanding from people about how to be fit.

Feeling Deprived?

I hear this a lot.. I am offered cakes, muffins, and all kinds of delicious assorted pastries on a daily basis at my real estate office and many other places (drooling over the Starbucks pastry case every morning). I always turn them down, and I’ll hear so many people say to me, “why deprive yourself?… life is too short.”

I see these people chowing down all the muffins every week and I’m actually thinking the same thing about them… Aren’t they depriving themselves of nice bodies by eating them everyday? None of these people are in shape and they are all sitting around with big belly rolls and jiggles all over their bodies.(not like I'm judging but if I am questioned about my choices I will point fingers)  I’m just thinking to myself when I see them, that they are depriving themselves of the great feeling of being fit. They are depriving themselves of being at their best. So I guess it’s all in how you look at it. I’ve personally never felt deprived by turning down the goodies. Sure I love them. I was raised on junk food and sugar,.. it’s like mother’s milk to me. But the feeling of being fit all the time is far greater to me than the temporary satisfaction of feasting on the morning pastry basket. So I will keep turning them down (not easy though) and I will not be depriving myself of the body I want. Everyone has different fitness goals, but I think no matter what they are, it will have to involve some level of making cutbacks on all that stuff. So next time you’re feeling like ‘oh, poor me… I can’t eat that stuff for my fitness goals’.. focus on what you’re getting (the body you want),… not what you’re giving up and it gives it a new positive perspective. A fit body requires a lot of food, but unfortunately you probably won’t reach your fitness goals by feeding on doughnuts, cookies and cakes.  I have to look at those goodies practically every single day, and I don’t think they’ll ever go away, so that is how I get past it.

Number on the Scale Rant

Many people have asked me at work why I eat chicken and tuna  all the time if I am not trying to lose any weight…. here’s why….
It is VERY possible to lose weight eating crappy unhealthy food, or even maintain your weight while eating crap.   I can start dining at Dunkin Donuts every morning, then stop at McDonalds for lunch and pizza for dinner and still lose some weight,  as long as I am burning more than I consume …… However,…it is very possible to maintain a certain scale number and actually look like total shit.  ( you can be skinny and have HIGH body fat =  skinny fat)
Scale weight tells you a few things…. If you are over weight, the scale will tell you,…. if you are underweight, the scale will tell you…Will the scale tell you if you look good ? or if you are fit?  NO . Does your body look nice because you ring up a certain number on the scale? NO.

Eating properly changes your body composition and makes you look better. How strict should you be about not eating crap?  It depends on the look you want and how much sacrifice you are willing to make, everyone is different.  If you want to be a certain weight and wear a certain size clothing,  and  you don’t mind having cellulite….,belly rolls, and hanging flab…. eat all the crap you want while maintaining your special number on the scale. Throw some liquor into the mix and sit back and watch the cellulite spread…..still while maintaining that scale number.

If you want visible muscle and a lean looking body, staying away from the crap and eating properly is what makes the difference… regardless of how great you do your workouts.

Some people become so fixated on the scale and getting a ‘magic’ number to settle on for a goal.  That  is such a small part of the picture.
My grandmother used to make sure she always weighed her ‘certain’ special number throughout her entire life.  But what she didn’t seem to realize was that without exercising and eating properly, (although she kept maintaining that number), she had 6 inches of hanging flab swinging on the backs of her arms and she always looked 9 months pregnant.   It didn’t have to be that way, it’s just a matter of exercising regularly and eating the right food.  She was attempting to ‘watch her weight’, but she had it all wrong.
My body composition has been all over the map over the past 20 years, from skinny, to skinny fat, to lean,  and then lean and muscular… all within a small margin of weight change on the scale.

Boring Workouts

"I'm bored with my workouts, and I think cardio is very boring...."
--One of the silliest workout excuses ever.

Oh really,... are you bored working out?  Well no shit,... it 'IS'  boring.  I've done a  lot of exciting things in my life so far
and working out is certainly not one of them.  It is just something that needs to be done on a regular basis if you would like to keep yourself fit.

You know what is even more boring than working out though?  How about trying on all your clothes and having them not fit, .... with
fat rolls and jiggles everywhere, and a cellulite party all over your ass.  That just may be a little bit more boring than working out.

I don't blame anyone for thinking the workout process is supposed to be a thrill though.  Just about every single commercial for exercise equipment and
fitness  products out there,   claims that is is fun (and easy)..... I know what fun is,... and working out isn't any fun and I think everyone knows that or
they would all be doing it everyday.  It just comes down to this, fun or not.....if you really want to be fit and take good care of yourself,   you are going to have to get your ass up and do your
workouts consistently.

If by chance you ARE doing it  just for fun and you're getting big thrills from walking on a treadmill but you don't want to see any results at all,.... then make sure you are never consistent about it and keep starting over every week after you screw up..  This way you are guaranteed not
to ever see any results and you''ll just keep having your fun and thrills with the workout process once in a while.

If you  actually DO workout consistently and eat right all the time,  you'll keep getting in better shape and that can actually be fun and exciting in it's own
way.   But if you are waiting for thrills and excitement every time you go to the gym or exercise,... I think it will be a long wait.

Diet Books

An important thing that is not discussed in most diet books, is that to reach a fitness goal, there is always some level of hard work and sacrifice involved. It seems few are willing to step forward and speak that very real truth. Everyone wants to hear that you can eat ALL the foods you love while dieting and put in just a tiny amount of exercise, so that becomes the basis for the war of the diet books marketed to the masses. It becomes a contest of who can tell everyone what they want to hear? For example,.. you can eat cookies on my diet! or You can eat anything you want on my diet and lose a lot of weight using a magic secret. It is madness. Isn’t any goal, (no matter what it is) achieved by some level of hard work and sacrifice? Not by doing the ‘least amount possible’ which would be the theme in so many of the diet books? I think I’ll write a diet book called get fit with Poptarts, M&M’s, and booze. ( It won’t work though.)

"Lucky"

When my friends and relatives see me, they will always say: “you’re so lucky you are thin and can eat whatever you want:. I say: ” I eat healthy food all the time, that’s why I’m not fat. Friends: ” oh, well you are sooooooooo lucky that you like you like that stuff because we don’t like it at all.. ha ha ,. We only like all the food that isn’t healthy..ha ha ha:. We crave’ it all the time.

Oh yeah,: that’s right,: it is so LUCKY that I love to eat plain f**king nasty old tuna out of can for some meals while you are snorfing down a delicious f**king pepperoni pizza with extra crust and washing it down with a few vodka tonics, there is no way I would crave eating that scrumptious meal, bring on the smelly plain cold tuna instead because I just f**king LOVE that shit over the amazing smell and taste of a hot fresh extra cheesy pizza. I mean come on, get a f**king grip, who the f**k wouldn’t like the pizza over the tuna,: maybe there are some: but that is strange. The point is,:.. the pizza won’t help me reach my goals, so I’ll take the tuna instead and I won’t complain about it because that is my choice… but it is certainly not my preference, because I am indeed ‘craving’ the pizza. If you don’t care about being in shape, fine..not a problem,.. everyone has different goals and priorities but please don’t call me lucky for making daily sacrifices you are not making.
